There’s something about the water that has instilled fear in the minds of the average human since the dawn of time. It makes sense, then, that when man discovered how to capture moving images to film, he decided to instill this fear even deeper through aquatic horror movies in which the viewer gets almost every possible reason to stay out of the water for good. Here are six examples of water-based horror movies that are worth a watch this week before the summer ends.

The best shark movie of all time. No question. Don’t even try to debate it. It has been making viewers scared of the open water since its release in 1974, and it still holds up today. John WIlliams’ iconic theme for Ẹrẹkẹ, featuring a simplistic chromatic piano melody, has become one of the most recognizable themes in all of cinema. The giant shark film still holds up today, and if you don’t believe me, that means it’s been too long since you’ve watched it.

Grabbers (2012)

When tentacled aliens from the sea begin to attack an Island off Ireland, it is soon discovered that the only way to repel them is with alcohol. And so, the entire town decides to party and get drunk. It’s the only way! If only everything in life was that easy. Unfortunately, Afara problems in life cannot be solved with alcohol. Only aliens, I suppose. A really fun movie that doesn’t attempt to take itself too seriously. It stars Ruth Bradley, who appeared in a short during Holidays, for the St. Patrick’s Day segment.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)

My personal favorite of all the aquatic horror films, Ẹlẹdẹ Dudu was originally released in black and white and 3-D – what a sight that must have been in 1954. A true spectacle. The Gil-man, as he has come to be known, was one of the only Universal Monsters creation to be a full suit as opposed to mostly make up. Ben Chapman, the actor who played the Gil-man, was therefore never really immortalized the way that Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, and Bela Lugosi were because of this. Don’t worry, though, Ben. You’re still important to me. I luv u.

Piranha (1978)

Joe Dante directed this aquatic horror ripoff of Steven Spielberg’s Ẹrẹkẹ, just like many other directors did, and Universal considered getting in the way of the film’s release. However, Spielberg saw it and enjoyed it, allowing the film to be released without issue. It’s a satirical film, so don’t go in expected straight horror like Awọn ẹrẹkẹ.

Ọkọ Ẹmi (2002)

No, I’m not saying that Ghost Ship is all that good of a movie. Still, the opening of the film is well worth the watch. On top of that, there’s an incredibly corny nu-metal soundtrack. It’s not a good movie, but it’s a ton of fun. There’s some good gore, some fun kills, and a lot of bad dialogue. Early 2000’s popcorn horror at its best (or worst, your call).

Zombi (1979)

Okay, so, I know this isn’t a movie that really centers on the sea. It’s on an island, but the scene with the zombie fighting an actual shark is so impressive that it would be nothing short of disrespectful to leave it off this list. It’s still got a pretty nautical vibe, regardless. If you’ve never seen Lucio Fulci’s zombie masterpiece, you need to change that immediately.
